Johnnie Inez Peterson collection, 1933-1942.

The collection consists of clippings, pictures and manuscripts given to the Library by Miss Peterson when she retired from the University of Georgia faculty. Most of the clippings are biographical in nature, many about Georgia authors. Some of the names included are Sidney Lanier, Frank Stanton, and Eugene Talmadge.

Sidney Lanier was a noted Southern poet and composer, born in Macon, Georgia, on Feb. 3, 1842. He graduated from Oglethorpe University and voluntarily fought for the Confederacy as a member of the 2nd Battalion Infantry (Georgia), and the Signal Corps. It is likely that Lanier contracted tuberculosis during his stay at at Union prison camp, and the complications from that disease would affect Lanier his entire life. Frank L. Stanton (1857-1927) was proclaimed the Georgia Poet Laureate in 1925. He was also a columnist at the Atlanta Constitution for forty years, writing the "Just from Georgia" column.
